The Weaponisation Of “God Can Use Anybody...”

On Lazy Theology and Moral Evasion

A dialogue confronting lazy theology, moral evasion, and the weaponization of
“God can use anybody” to excuse cruelty, hypocrisy, and the erasure of mercy

On Lazy Theology and Moral Evasion

The Old Man said: “The first horseman of the Apocalypse rides a white horse, holding in one hand a huge flag. Its inscription reads: ‘God Can Use Anybody.’ And he gathers unto himself a huge crowd. An army of fervent supporters....”

He paused, then asked,

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

“What are you thinking, sir?” I asked.

He smiled.

“I’ll give you a hint.”

Lazy theology.

The brood of vipers.

(I laughed a little.)

There was a glint in his eyes as he continued.

Imagine That... “God can use anybody…”

Well, yes.

Gravity can cause anything to fall.

Rain can get anything wet.

Fire can melt any ice.

The sun can dry anything, no matter how soaked.

Groundnut oil can fry anything.

Peugeot can overtake Mercedes.

Profound stuff.

When Truth Becomes Inconvenient

When people hate truth, not “the Truth”, but plain, inconvenient truth, they invent every theology imaginable to justify the putrid.

Of course God can use anybody.

He used Messi to showcase the beautiful game.

Before him, Pelé.

So… what’s He using you for?

What Is Your Assignment?

To showcase what, exactly?

Cheap grace?

You think hating on vulnerable people earns you applause from angels and saints in heaven?

Oh, you don’t hate them?

You just walk past them as they lie stricken by the roadside, rushing off to church, knowing, as you must, that the Bible says a good… erm… Samaritan is on his way.

Is that how you justify every atom of oxygen you consume?

Every ray of sunlight sent your way?

Cheerleaders for the Indefensible

What is God using you for, aside from being a cheerleader for the indefensible?

Seriously.

What is your divine assignment?

Defending the indefensible?

Like the wicked servant who buried his talent and then blamed the master?

“Oh, I knew you were a wicked man…”
So I did nothing.

Your actions, dear adherents of lazy theology, whether you know it or not, proclaim one thing loudly:

“Lord, You are a wicked God.” (God forbid)

Mercy, Inverted

WhileTheologians like my wonderful Father Giorgio draw from the deep wells of theology truths such as these, paraphrased:

Underestimating the mercy of God is one of the gravest offenses we can commit against Him. We do a great wrong to God and to His grace when we place punishment before mercy. “God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking His mercy.” To rank God’s justice above His mercy is, he said, a sick thought. And no one can place limits on God’s love.

And yet there you sit, clutching one doctrine as though your life depends on it, when what you really need is to let it go.

Let go of defending the erasure of mercy. You who rank God’s justice above His mercy. You who place limits on God’s love.

You substitute the fruits of the Spirit with the works of the flesh, then raise an altar to them and dance around it shamelessly, claiming to worship the true God.

Where was I?

Yes.

You who say, “God can use anybody…” but not the meek, not the suffering, not the marginalised. God cannot use them to teach compassion? To teach empathy?

God can use anybody… For real?

Well. Gravity can cause anything to fall. Rain can get anything wet. Fire can melt any ice. The sun can dry anything. Who would have thought it?

“You rest your case,” I helped him conclude.

“Yes,” he said. “I’ve done my job. They can argue with themselves.”
