Christians of the Cross Vs. Christians of the Purse

The Gospel of Christ Vs. The Gospel of Gold
Christiani Crucis adversus Christianos Crumenae
Christians of the Cross Vs. Christians of the Purse

by Don Kenobi

I saw a book by a certain Pastor Leech titled How Heaven Invades Your Finances behind a shop window.

“Pastor Leech?” I thought, shaking my head in amusement as I walked past.
What will these wily coyotes do next?

But then anger gripped me.

Why won’t these leeches leave the sheep alone?
These wolves dressed up as shepherds?

I turned back—and as I stood before the glass display, glaring at the book cover, the words from a Pink Floyd classic took on new meaning:

We don’t need no indoctrination,
We don’t need no thought control,
Stop the phantasm from the pulpits,
Hey! Leecher! Leave us sheep alone!

What began as irritation became holy anger.
I picked up a rock, but as I raised it, a voice within me whispered sharply:

“Hey dude, what are you doing with a rock in your hand?”

I dropped it immediately.

“Why do you hate the book so?” the voice asked.

“Why can’t they teach how Heaven invades the soul?
It’s always money, money, money…
Money has driven them mad—and they drive me mad!” I responded.

“Then write about it,” the voice said.

And so I wrote.

Did Heaven Invade the Apostles’ Finances?

I don’t need to read that book to know it’s mostly about giving—
not offerings, but tithes to the pastors.

And I am quite certain these Scriptures will be absent:

Luke 11:41 — Jesus speaking

“But rather give alms of such things as you have;
then indeed all things are clean unto you.”

Jesus does not call for tithes.
He calls for charity to the poor—as the true cleansing act.

Acts 10:4 — Cornelius and the angel

“Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.”

Heaven remembered Cornelius—not for tithes,
but for almsgiving and prayer.

2 Corinthians 9:7 — Paul on giving

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give;
not grudgingly, nor of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”

Paul teaches freewill giving
not compulsory tithing.

Heaven Will Not Invade Your Finances

Heaven has already told you what to do to obtain what you need
not what you desire—
for your Christian journey:

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,
and all these things shall be added unto you.”

(Matthew 6:30–33)

There’s nothing more to add.
Stop behaving like foolish Galatians.
Stop‼️

Imagine If the Church…

Imagine if certain sects today taught the true Jesus.

Isn’t it tragic that so many of the world’s deepest wounds
flow from false Christianity?

The ceaseless suffering of Palestinians.
The lingering shadow of the slave trade.

Imagine if the Church truly stood for:

  • what is true,

  • what is honest,

  • what is just,

  • what is pure,

  • what is lovely,

  • what is of good report,

  • what is virtuous,

  • what is praiseworthy.

Imagine if the Church not only thought on these things—
but taught them… earnestly, faithfully, relentlessly.

Imagine… a kinder, sweeter Church.
It is possible.

A Broken Body

Can you imagine the state of civilization
if St. Paul had preached the prosperity gospel?

Today the Church is a broken body—
the Head severed from the body,
the limbs severed from the torso.

All will be held accountable:

The mother-church—custodian of truth,
yet raising men swollen with arrogance.

The breakaway churches—once zealous,
now slain by the allure of filthy lucre.

Grace will be our only mitigation—
because we have failed in every respect.

Worse: we are not even bothered that we fail.

The True Gospel

Yes, Paul told slaves to obey their masters—
what else could a powerless man say in a brutal empire?

But look again:
the true gospel is non-violence,
non-resistance,
radical humility.

Now imagine Paul recast as:

  • Creflo Dollar,

  • Apostrophe Soulessman,

  • Jester DePlanter,

  • or their Nigerian counterparts—

preaching envy, competition, prizes,
boasting in wealth and power.

Imagine that!

If you cannot imagine Paul treating the gospel
with the same levity as your pastor does—
yet you sit there nodding…

then you are not a victim.
You are an accomplice in the despoliation of the Church.

The treasure being plundered is not silver or gold—
it is the Name of Christ.

If the Christ you follow is a Christ of gold,
a Christ of riches,
a Christ of trophies,
a Christ of open doors and new season breakthroughs…

then take a bow.

You have outgrown the apostles.
You have discovered a truth that somehow eluded them.

But no—
even sarcasm cannot conceal my grief.

You fellowship with Mammon
and think you fellowship with Christ.

You have traded the joy of salvation
for the rapture of filthy lucre.

And this—this heap of worldly treasure—
is this what you will present to the Son of God on Judgment Day?

Read this each night before you sleep:

“I never knew you.
Depart from me, you worker of iniquity.”

Can you imagine Him—
the One who formed you,
loved you,
suffered for you,
bled for you—
looking at you with sorrow and saying:

“Depart from me…”

Imagine failing Jesus so completely
you ask Him to die again for you.
(And He would, if it would save you—
but He knows it cannot: Hebrews 9:27.)

But There Is Hope

There is hope
for those who can still read,
still listen,
still bend the knee.

Ask for God the Holy Spirit.

Remember who He is:

  • Guide and Teacher – leading into all truth (John 16:13)

  • Comforter and Advocate – strengthening and defending (John 14:16)

  • Sanctifier and Transformer – forming Christ within you (Gal. 5:22–23)

  • Empowerer for Mission – gifting you for the Church

  • Seal and Guarantee – marking you as God’s own (Eph. 1:13–14)

He is God’s presence within—
comforting, guiding, transforming, empowering, sealing.

So ask for the Holy Spirit:
for yourself, your household,
and the household of God.

And pray for the unity of the Church.

And that is the homily I wrote.

I rest my case.
