Mini Drama: The Gospel of Hate – A Lament for the Beloved
By Don Kenobi
CAST
The Priest — A solitary figure, weary but burning with conviction.
Chorus of Shadows — Disembodied voices; at times jeering, at times mourning.
Hooded Figures — Specters of violence and oppression.
The Lone Survivor — Final voice of defiance and hope.
SCENE 1 — THE AWAKENING
[Lights rise slowly. A priest stands center stage, Bible dangling at his side. A long silence. He inhales deeply — weary, but alive.]
Priest (softly, almost to himself):
This post… Michael Gerson’s post… Bush’s speechwriter…
Written for those excusing Trump’s racism…
It got me thinking.
[He lifts the Bible slightly, then lets it fall with a dull thud against his thigh.]
Priest:
The violence against Africans stolen from their homeland — horrific.
But harder still… the hatred.
Unrelenting. Pure. Spiritual.
[He clasps the Bible to his chest. Voice hushed.]
Priest:
The only explanation…
is that the African represents something they despise
with every fibre of their being.
[Silence. A bitter laugh escapes him.]
Priest:
Bitter truth tastes like ash, don’t it?
Don’t it?
[Chorus whispers faintly, overlapping:]
Chorus: “Ash… ash… bitter as ash…”
SCENE 2 — THE PARALLEL
[He steps into shadow, then whirls back suddenly.]
Priest:
Who else has been so relentlessly hated?
So brutally set upon — by those he loved?
And still loved — even now?
[He stares at the audience. Deadpan. Then spits sarcasm.]
Priest:
Hmmmm. Figure that one out yourself!
Chorus: “Yourself! Yourself! Yourself!”
Priest (remembering, softer):
And I thought Muhammad Ali was exaggerating…
Babies ripped from wombs…
But no.
SCENE 3 — THE FALSE NEWS NETWORK
[He raises the Bible. Spotlight narrows. His words grow sharp, mocking.]
Priest (thundering):
The Lying FALSE News Network!
Which creates a refuge for moral insomniacs —
where they may finally find rest!
[He slams the Bible against his palm — dull echo.]
Priest (pacing):
Since the past cannot be erased,
they rationalize it —
by demonizing those whose only crime
is waking up in the morning…
and looking heavenward with hope!
Chorus: (rising chant)
“How dare you look to the heavens?”
“How dare you still hope?”
“How dare you? How dare you?”
Priest (leaning forward, venom low):
The Lying False News Network drives this without end…
Feeding their rage.
And that anger — oh yes, that anger —
is the pillow upon which they rest at night.
Priest (deliberate, narrowing eyes):
It whispers:
“You have no responsibility for the past.”
[Silence. His tone sharpens.]
Priest:
Nietzsche said, “Wrong a man and he will surely become a villain.”
To which I add:
Wrong him always —
and he ALWAYS will be a villain.
Chorus: (mournful) “Always… always… always…”
SCENE 4 — THE FALSE GOSPEL
[The priest’s pacing grows fevered.]
Priest:
They play a long game, bruh.
Brilliantly.
Corrupting greedy Christian leaders in Africa —
sowing tares in our soil…
calling it Prosperity Gospel.
[He points sharply at the audience.]
Priest:
Joe-Nothing Bamenda!
Thomas Sowell!
Candace Owens!
Yes — even YOU!
Chorus: “You! You! Even YOU!”
Priest (cold, damning):
Proudly parroting lies.
Buying anti-woke poison.
Wearing self-hatred as if it were a crown.
Chorus: “A crown of shame… a crown of thorns…”
SCENE 5 — THE STRUGGLE
[The priest raises the Bible high. His voice breaks.]
Priest (shouting, strangled):
Domine… salva nos… perimus!
Lord, save us — we perish!
[The sound of clubs striking flesh fills the stage. Hooded Figures rush in, seizing him. A violent struggle. Lights strobe.]
Chorus: “Perish! Perish! Perish!”
[The Hooded Figures fall back, defeated. A Lone Survivor emerges, sword raised skyward.]
Lone Survivor (crying out with fire):
We shall not die!
We shall live —
to declare the works of the Lord
in the land of the living!
Chorus: “Live! Live! In the land of the living!”
[Lights fade to black. Silence.]
